I’m excited to be working with Beyond the Wanderlust for their Portland Wedding Inspired Shoot out this September! I’ll be styling some pretty bridal photo opportunities for participating photographers. I can’t even tell you how excited I am about our concept and venue. For now we are keeping it under wraps… but, it is going to be gorgeous.
What is a shoot out?
From the event website, “A shootout is an awesome opportunity to build your photography portfolio, meet other photographers, models and local vendors. We will do all the work, select beautiful models, hire professional hair and makeup artists, stylists, and prop designers, and pick a beautiful location. All you need to do is show up with your gear and shoot!”
How can I participate?
There are a few spots still available, but space is very limited. Beyond the Wanderlust shootouts are kept small so that participants get one-on-one time with the models, vendors, and other professionals. Click over to the shoot-out event site for more information or to purchase your spot. Spots in the class cost $199 per person, however there is currently a 25% off flash sale that will last until Sunday!
I’m really excited to be introducing the Second Annual Artisan Market that is slotted for October 6. It will be a fun opportunity to start your holiday shopping early with several local artisan vendors. The event is free for anyone to attend and is located at the Family Friendly McMenamin’s Kennedy School. A raffle winner will receive a gift basket filled with goodies donated by vendors!
Throughout the next month or two, I’ll be sharing stories from some of the vendors through interviews, profiles, giveaways, and DIYs. I love it when local businesses get together to make a great thing happen.
Potential Vendors:
For more information about becoming a vendor for the 2nd Annual Artisan Market or to sign up and purchase booth space please check out the Eventbrite page. There is still one 8-foot spaces available for purchase. Don’t think you have enough product to fill 8-feet? Go in with a friend and end up saving money over the 4-foot space price! Space prices start at just $50. The coordinators of the event take NO additional portions of sales AND vendors receive free beverage tickets for tasty McMenamin’s beer.
“Like” the PDX Artisan Market on Facebook to keep updated about vendors attending, check out specials available, and to remind you of the event!
Disclaimer: I received a complementary happy hour and cocktail instruction from Aviary Restaurant in SE Portland for review purposes. I was not otherwise compensated. Check out my review of the Aviary Happy Hour.
While enjoying several tasty dishes and cocktails at Aviary’s Happy Hour last week the barman Russ Hunsinger shared how he came up with one of Aviary’s most popular cocktails, the Brix Layer. Not only did he share his inspiration and thoughts behind the tasty concoction, but he pulled together a make shift bar in the dining room and showed us how to make it!
Russ came up with the drink while hanging out with friends, drinking Cabernet. He really wanted to figure out a way to create a cocktail that utilized the wine. He started off using a basic old fashioned recipe and working from there. The layering of the drink happened naturally and changes with the type of whiskey or cab used.
This recipe is only an approximation of the awesomeness we tasted at Aviary. But, I wanted to share with those of you that didn’t live in the Portland area and just have to schedule a trip to Aviary in to a future visit to our lovely city.
Ingredients for the At-Home-Version of The Brix Layer:
*You can use any sour really, but the Aviary House Sour is made with lemon, lime, orange juice, and sugar. So, to get a similar taste you should use a homemade fresh sour that has orange juice in it. Try out this sweet-and-sour recipe from Baked Bree.
Directions for the At-Home-Version of The Brix Layer:
In a mixing tin put one slice of orange, a few Parisian brandied cherries, 1 sugar cube and 8 dashes of bitters
Muddle all ingredients in tin VERY WELL, releasing all of the oils and juices in the orange
Add 2 oz of sour to the mixing tin
Add 2 oz of Buffalo Trace Bourbon (or your favorite bourbon) to the tin
Add ice to the tin and STIR with spoon
Double strain the mixture into the cocktail glass
Using the spoon (as in video below) to slow your pour, pour the 3/4 oz of Cabernet into the cocktail glass
